Erika Bukkfalvi Hilliard is a registered clinical social worker in Vancouver, British Columbia. She has worked in the field of mental health since 1971. She worked for ten years in community mental health and in acute care psychiatry since 1985. She was approved for Private Practice by the Private Practice Board of the B.C. Association of Social Workers in 1982. She has a Master of Social Work and is a registered member of the Canadian Association of Social Workers, the BC Association of Social Workers, and a member of EMDRAC (the Canadian branch of the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Association: trauma counseling), and of the Canadian Society of Clinical Hypnosis.
Exposure to a vast continuum of emotional and mental suffering has given Erika a perspective and breadth of experience that allow her to assess a situation carefully and either draw on her own expertise or refer to appropriate resources. Her clinical work has been influenced by family systems theory, narrative approaches, human existential, trauma and loss theories. She has been professionally committed to remaining informed through ongoing continued education. In recent years, she has devoted herself to the study of EMDR and SRT.
Her therapeutic approach is eclectic. She begins with the practical and depending on the client's needs, moves on to in-depth issues, looking from the perspective of body, mind and action.
Erika has received an award for the publication of Bipolar Disorder, an Information Booklet for Patients, Families and Friends.
Her current book, Living Fully with Shyness and Social Anxiety, A Comprehensive Guide to Gaining Social Confidence, published by Marlowe & Company, New York, was released May 2005.
